Lifesaving at EGSLSC
Surf lifesaving is at the heart of what we do. Our volunteer lifesavers patrol local beaches during the summer season to keep our community safe. Whether it’s performing rescues, delivering first aid, giving surf safety advice, or simply keeping watch, our patrol members are the reason beachgoers can enjoy the water with confidence.
Why become a lifesaver
Becoming a lifesaver is rewarding, fun, and a great way to give back to your community. You’ll gain vital aquatic safety and rescue skills, stay active and healthy, form lifelong friendships, and maybe even save someone’s life.
How to Become a Lifesaver
To be eligible for patrols, members must hold one of the following awards:
- Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC)
- Bronze Medallion
- First Aid Certificate
Training for these awards is offered through the club each season. Once qualified, members are rostered onto patrols and take on responsibilities such as observing swimmers, responding to incidents, radio operations, first aid, and carrying out rescues under the direction of the Patrol Captain.
Patrol Commitments
Patrolling members are required to:
- Check the patrol roster and attend their designated patrols.
- Notify their Patrol Captain if unavailable and arrange a substitute where possible.
- Meet the club’s minimum patrol hour requirements to remain an active lifesaving member.
Rosters and patrol information are shared via club communication channels, noticeboards, and the SLSA Members Portal.
The Patrol Uniform
Lifesavers are easy to spot on the beach, wearing the distinctive red and yellow patrol uniform with “SURF RESCUE” clearly marked. This includes red shorts, yellow shirt, and the red-and-yellow quartered cap. The uniform not only identifies our lifesavers but also represents a proud tradition of service and community protection.
Patrol Season
Patrols run during the summer months, covering weekends and public holidays. Between the red and yellow flags, lifesavers draw a line of safety — ensuring that everyone who enters the water leaves it safely.
Across Western Australia, more than 5,000 volunteer surf lifesavers contribute over 100,000 hours every season. Here in Esperance, EGSLSC is proud to be part of this effort, keeping our coastline safe and fostering the next generation of lifesavers.
